Reading CAFE
Our Cafe Menu strategies are designed to help us become the best readers we can be! Deeply practice one strategy at a time while you're reading at home or in school!
What skill are YOU working on?
Comprehension- I understand what I read.
-Check for Understanding
-Back up and Reread
-Monitor and Fix Up Strategies
-Retell the events of the story
-Use prior knowledge to connect with text
-Make a picture or mental image
-Ask questions during reading
-Predict what will happen, use text to confirm
-Infer and support with evidence
-Use text features (titles, headings, captions, bold words, glossary)
-Summarize text, include sequence of main events
-Use main idea and supporting details to determine importance
-Determine and analyze author’s purpose and support with text
-Recognize literary elements (genre, plot, character, setting, problem/resolution)
-Recognize and explain cause and effect relationships
-Compare and contrast within and between text
Accuracy- I can read the words
-Cross Checking: Do the pictures and/or words look right? Does it sound right? Does it make sense?
-Use the pictures: Do the words and pictures match?
-Fill in a word/guess a word that makes sense if you don't know the meaning.
-Use beginning, middle and ending sounds...don't forget any parts of the word!
-Blend sounds, stretch and read.
-Chunk letters and sounds together
-Read the word as a blank then come back to it.
Fluency- I can read accurately, with expression and a nice flow while still understanding what I read!
-Enthusiastic Reading
-Read appropriate level texts - "Just Right”
-Reread text!
-Practice common sight words and high frequency words
-Adjust and apply different reading rates to match text
-Use punctuation to enhance phrasing and prosody
Expand Vocabulary- Figure out meanings of words you don't know!
-Voracious Reading
-Tune in to interesting words and use new vocabulary in my speaking and writing
-Use pictures, illustrations and diagrams
-Use words parts to determine meaning of words (prefixes, suffixes, origins, abbreviations)
-Use prior knowledge and context to predict and confirm meaning.
-Ask a friend what the word means!
-Use reading tools such as dictionaries, thesauruses and glossaries.
Behaviors That Support Reading:
-Select and read “Just Right” books.-Get started right away.
-Stay in one place while reading.
-Work quietly, not distracting yourself or your neighbors.
-Read the whole time.
-Practice increasing reading stamina...challenge yourself to beat your longest !
